Much of our website is open to everyone, but some sections are “members-only.” For our members, this post is a summary of how to begin discussion posts, add For Sale items, how to recover your password if you don’t remember it, and other information about using and navigating our RAS website.
FIRST TIME REGISTRATION AND LOGIN
New RAS members will receive an email invitation to register and get Login access to the website. Follow the instructions in this email. Here is some information about the process…
If you already have a WordPress.com account for some reason (you have your own blog, for example), you can simply Login with your existing WordPress username and password and then ACCEPT the invitation to now be an Author on our RAS site.
If you DO NOT have a WordPress account, you must register for an account. To do so, follow Step 1 below FIRST to create and confirm your account.
NOTE: You do NOT have to create a blog. On the registration page, look to the right and you will see an option to SIGNUP FOR JUST A USERNAME.
Once you register, WordPress will send you an email to confirm you are who you say you are. When you get that confirmation email, click on the link included in it and your accout will become active.
NEXT, come back to your invitation email and click on “Accept Invitation” in Step 2 to Login to the RAS website.
When you Login, you will always be taken directly to YOUR global WordPress DASHBOARD. This is the page where you can change any of your personal data (username, name, email address, password). Please ENTER your first and last name on this page.
To get to the RAS home page, look in the upper left corner of the Dashboard for the name “Richmond Audio Society” and click on that name. Also, in the upper right corner you will see your User Name. If you hover your mouse over your username, a drop down box will appear that includes a link to the Richmond Audio Society page.
To get to the Dashboard from any other page on the web site, click on Site Admin in the right column.
PASSWORD | LOG IN
Lost my Password / Change my Password: At the login screen, click on Lost your password? to have the web site send you a new password by email. You will first receive an email asking you to confirm it really is you asking for the new password. Once you confirm, you will be sent a second email with a new password. Once you log in with the new password sent to you, you can create your own new password by clicking on Profile on the Dashboard screen.
Logging In: To post or comment on the RAS web site, or to access any members-only content, you need to Log In with your Username and Password. To get to the log in screen, click on Log In on the home page. If you click on a link and get an error message (page not found), it is likely that you are NOT logged in.
Discussion Forum. The Discussion Forum page shows all posts chronologically. Posts that have been marked “Private” are for Members Only and will appear only when you are logged into the site. (If you are not logged in, you will see only the posts marked Public.) Click on the Categories links to filter posts by Category.
Posting: To make new posts, go to the Dashboard and click on the New Post button in the upper right hand corner of the title bar. An Add New Post screen will open. On this screen you have full control over the content and appearance (bold, italics, inserting photos, etc.) of your post. Be sure to SELECT A CATEGORY for your post so it shows up in your chosen topical category when published. You may also add tags to facilitate search by topics.
When you are satisfied with the content of your post, click on the Publish button on the right hand side of the screen to publish your post for other members to see. You will be able to EDIT your post after it is published. Other members will be able to add comments.
Visibility – Public or Private. As a registered RAS member you have full privileges to create your own posts in the member sections of the site and to comment on other posts. You can set the post’s VISIBILITY to be either Public or Private. The Visibility setting of Public means that the post is visible to anyone on the Internet; Private means that only registered RAS members logged into the site will be able to see it.
By default, posts are PUBLIC, so be sure to change this when posting personal information or when you want to initiate a conversation among RAS members.
Categories and Tags – Finding Relevant Posts. When creating a post, be sure to select a CATEGORY for the post (e.g., Music, Meetings, Vinyl, etc.) or TAGS so your post will show up if someone selects to view posts under that category or tag. Categories and Tags index the site for us.
Posting For Sale items: “For Sale” posts work like any other post. See the general instructions above. The difference to regular posts is that by selecting the “For Sale” category for the post, For Sale posts will be visible to anyone visiting the site and will show up in the search engines like Google, Bing, etc. after a few days. If this is a special offer to RAS members only, you can change the Visibility to “Private” and the post will display only to RAS members who are logged in to the website.
CHANGING YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS OR PASSWORD
Change Email Address or Password: Once you login the first time, you can change your password on the Dashboard page. In the left column, go to Users | Personal Settings. Scroll down to find where you can change your email address or your password. If you forget your password, you can always click on Lost your password? to have a new password sent to your registered email account.
