Early Life

Anthony Kiedis was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on November 1, 1962. Kiedis is a well-known figure in alternative rock as the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Sonny Bono of Sonny & Cher was his godfather.

Kiedis’ parents divorced when he was three years old. Following that, he lived in Michigan with his mother, Peggy, and visited his father, John, in California. His father made the majority of his money from drug dealing, but he also dabbled in acting. Kiedis was exposed to the Los Angeles club scene while living with his father, where he saw rock acts such as the Eagles, Neil Young, Deep Purple, and Rod Stewart.

Kiedis acted out in school because he developed an aversion to authority at a young age. He eventually persuaded his mother to allow him to live with his father in California. Kiedis moved in with his father in his early teens and soon began experimenting with drugs. He began by smoking marijuana and progressed to heroin, cocaine, and Quaaludes.

According to Scar Tissue, Kiedis’s later-released autobiography, his father made a lot of money by dealing marijuana and other illegal substances. By the mid-1970s, John Kiedis had decided to try his hand at acting, enrolling in classes and adopting the stage name “Blackie Dammet.” Anthony also started acting under the stage name “Cole Dammet.” He was cast in a few commercials and small roles.

Aspiring Musician

Kiedis met and became friends with Michael Balzary, better known as Flea, and Hillel Slovak at Fairfax High School. Slovak had a band called Anthym, and Balzary eventually joined as the bassist. Kiedis served as the MC for some of their performances. They were also interested in the emerging punk scene, attending shows by bands like Black Flag.

During the latter part of high school, Kiedis moved out of his father’s house to live with a friend. He was able to maintain his grades despite living in the midst of a party scene. Kiedis performed well enough to gain admission to UCLA. College, on the other hand, did not hold his attention for long.

Kiedis got his vocal style inspiration from Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five’s hit song “The Message” in 1982. The following year, he formed a band with friends Slovak and Flea (who were already in other bands) and Jack Irons on drums. The Red Hot Chili Peppers quickly became a popular fixture on the Los Angeles club scene.

When Slovak and Irons’ other band, What Is This, landed a record deal, the group’s lineup quickly changed. Kiedis and Flea continued with their unique funk-punk sound, enlisting guitarist Jack Sherman and drummer Cliff Martinez. The band was eventually dubbed the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers

Their self-titled debut in 1984 did not sell well, but the group began to gain a following with their energetic live shows. The Red Hot Chili Peppers, who were often over-the-top rebels, even performed a few times while only wearing strategically placed tube socks. For their second album, Freaky Styley, the band enlisted the help of funk legend George Clinton as producer. The album also marked Slovak and Irons’ return to the band.

Kiedis’s extracurricular activities were beginning to take over his life. He was heavily addicted to heroin and cocaine, and his bandmates kicked him out for a while. Kiedis went through detox after returning to Michigan for a short time. He returned to Los Angeles and the band, but he didn’t last long.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ third album, The Uplift Mofo Party Plan, was released in 1987. The album was even charted on the Billboard 200. Kiedis suffered a significant personal loss the following year. Slovak, a longtime friend and bandmate, died of a heroin overdose on June 25, 1988. Following the tragedy, Irons left the band, and Kiedis eventually went to a rehabilitation center.

In an attempt to resurrect the band, Kiedis and Flea brought in guitarist Blackbyrd McKnight and drummer D.H. Peligro, but this lineup did not work. They then recorded Mother’s Milk with guitarist John Frusciante and drummer Chad Smith. They began to gain more fans and media attention. MTV aired videos for two songs: “Knock Me Down” and “Higher Ground,” a cover of Steve Wonder’s hit.

Kiedis got into legal trouble after a post-concert incident in 1989. According to The New York Times, he was accused of sexual battery and indecent exposure following a concert at George Mason University in Virginia that April. He was later fined.

Mainstream Success

In 1991, the Red Hot Chili Peppers had a major career breakthrough with their next album, BloodSugarSexMagik, produced by Rick Rubin. The album sold over 4 million copies, thanks in large part to hits such as “Under the Bridge,” “Give It Away,” and “Suck My Kiss.” Frusciante eventually left the band before it joined the Lollapalooza alternative music tour in 1992.

Following a few false starts, the Chili Peppers eventually replaced Frusciante with guitarist Dave Navarro, who had previously worked with Jane’s Addiction. This lineup recorded the platinum-selling One Hot Minute in 1995. “Aeroplane” and “My Friends” were two of the album’s biggest hits.

Kiedis was involved in a motorcycle accident in Los Angeles in July 1997. He was riding his motorcycle when he was hit by a car, breaking his wrist and forearm. Kiedis sued the driver for damages the following year.

Frusciante was back in the band by the time the Red Hot Chili Peppers released their hit album Californication in 1999, replacing Navarro, who had left to pursue solo projects. “Around the World,” “Scar Tissue,” and the title track all charted well. By the Way, released in 2002, was also a big seller, peaking at number two on the Billboard 200.

With Stadium Arcadium, the Red Hot Chili Peppers topped the Billboard 200 album charts for the first time in 2006. Kiedis told Rolling Stone magazine the following year that the Red Hot Chili Peppers had “disbanded for the time being.” Everyone in the band wanted to take a break after touring extensively in support of their latest album. In addition to relaxing, Kiedis was the festival curator for the New American Music Festival in August 2008.

I’m With You, the Chili Peppers’ tenth studio album and first since Stadium Arcadium, was released in August 2011. The album included the hit singles “Monarchy of Roses,” “Look Around,” and “Brendan’s Death Song,” as well as “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie,” the band’s 12th No. 1 single on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart.

Personal Life

For his candid 2004 autobiography, Kiedis borrowed the title from the Red Hot Chili Peppers hit “Scar Tissue,” in which he described his extensive drug use and relationships with women such as actress Ione Skye and director Sofia Coppola. He also revealed that he had hepatitis C. “I feel like I’m just getting started as a person and a musician. I consider this to be the halftime report “During an interview about his book, Kiedis told People magazine.

Kiedis and then-girlfriend Heather Christie welcomed their first child, Everly Bear, in October 2007. The couple divorced in 2008.
